A large scale cannabis operation has come to the south suburbs.

One of the largest cannabis operators in the country, 4Front Ventures, opened one of the largest indoor cultivation facilities of its kind in Matteson. Local elected officials and business leaders celebrated Tuesday what will eventually be close to 500 good-paying jobs with the construction of a new 558,000-square-foot cannabis cultivation production facility on the 2100 block of Central Avenue.

The cannabis industry has exploded in Illinois with regulated sales statewide in 2020 said to be over a billion dollars. With growers and dispensaries scrambling to meet demand, this new Matterson facility holds the promise of economic development.
